When severe weather strikes, anxiety spikes for some folks in Green Country. The News On 6's Ashli Sims spoke with a local expert about weathering the nerves that come along with the storm.

When the skies rumble and flash, some just ignore it, others become more alert. But for some the signs of severe weather whip up severe anxiety.

"My heart starts racing and I just start shaking and it gets worse as I get older. You'd think it would get better. But it doesn't," said Tiffany Parks.

Parks has lived in Oklahoma all her life and lived in fear of a twister. She traces her anxiety back to childhood.

"Just knowing that the storms are coming. It never fails. I'll wake up like five minutes before the storm hits Tulsa and be glued to the TV," said Parks.

Psychiatry professors at OU-Tulsa say being anxious over storms is completely normal. But sometimes it can mean something more.

"And I think the key difference is your ability to function," said Dr. Phillip Leon.

Dr. Leon says some may suffer from a specific phobia, like a fear of thunderstorms. Others might have a panic or anxiety disorder that's merely triggered by threatening weather.

"Somebody with severe phobia or other severe anxiety they might get frozen. They might not be able to use their plan. They get stuck," said Dr. Leon.

The fear of severe weather can be just as real as the damage storms cause. While some say warnings can increase their anxiety.

Dr. Leon says ignoring what could be going on around you is not the answer.

"You can keep the news on and watch the weather, but do something relaxing during that time," said Dr. Leon.

Parks says information is her coping mechanism.

"A lot of people complain about them being on the air too much. I want them on the air! I want to know exactly what's happening," said Parks.

Dr. Leon says you need to consult a professional to determine if your anxiety is caused by a storm phobia or an actual anxiety or panic disorder. He also suggests adding a few things to your storm kit.

Along with your bottled water, flashlight, prescription medicine and weather radio, throw in a crossword puzzle or a coloring book for the kids. Something to help ease your nerves, when severe weather strikes.
