Injury Prevention
*Do not let infants and toddlers play with the following items; they are high risk choking:
Marbles
Coins
Toothpicks
Grapes
Peanuts
Peanut Butter
Crayons
Marshmallows
- Keep pot and pan handles out of reach to prevent scalding burns.
- Monitor water temperature to prevent bath water burns.
- Keep hot drinks out of reach.
- Keep all household cleaning, prescription medication and other poisonous
materials secured.
- Know the number to the poison control center in the event of a poisoning emergency.
- Wear safety equipment such as helmets when riding bicycles, skate boards or rollerblading. Make sure the helmet fits properly.
- Wear wrist guards to prevent wrist fractures during skating, skate boarding or rollerblading.
Illness Prevention
- Always wash hands after using the restroom, before eating, after eating and after playing outside.
- Use good hand washing techniques, sing happy birthday to your child while washing hands, use soap and dry thoroughly.
- When using over the counter medication for children, make sure the tamper resistant package is intact.
- Consult a physician and always follow directions.
- Be aware that any drug taken in excess can be lethal to children.
- Know the expiration date.
- Never identify medication as candy, it may be confusing to children who see pills lying out and that can be lethal.
- Never take medication is front of children, they mimic adult behavior.
- Never give an empty pill bottle to children to play with, there may be residue from the medication that could harm them.
- Talk with a physician or pharmacist before giving two or more medications.
- Follow age limit restrictions.
- Do not put one medication into an empty bottle of another.
- Keep medications out of reach.
