Testimony Underway In Day Care Murder Trial

Jurors in the murder trial of a former daycare owner accused of killing a toddler in her care, heard testimony from nine witnesses on Wednesday, including the baby's mother.  The News On 6's crime reporter Lori Fullbright reports Joshua Minton's mother did a great job of keeping her composure on the witness stand, until she got to the point where she saw her baby in the hospital last May and held him until he died.

Jurors also heard an audio taped confession from Vicki Chiles, the daycare owner.

Katie Minton was pregnant last May and dropped Joshua and one of his sister's off at the daycare so she could go to a doctor's appointment.  She says Chiles called her and told her Josh had quit breathing.

An EMSA paramedic testified Joshua showed no signs of life when he arrived, but the paramedic did notice a sticky substance on the boy's face.

A Department of Human Services worker who happened to stop by the daycare that day said Chiles repeatedly wiped the boy's face while she was trying to give him CPR.

A detective testified he found masking tape that had hair, blood and vomit on it.

They also played a tape recording where Chiles admitted to police that she'd put tape around Joshua's hands and mouth.  She called it a last resort because the boy was being whiney and fussing during naptime.

Chiles also said on the tape, she felt like scum for hurting the little boy who seemed to love her so, always hugging her and following her around.

Testimony in the trial resumes on Thursday.
