LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) -- A 13-year-old boy is now stuck in Mexico after allegedly being taken there by a teacher at his school.
Fernando Rodriguez and 25-year-old Kelsey Peterson were taken into custody in the border city of Mexicali Friday. Peterson, a sixth-grade math teacher at a Nebraska middle school, fled with the teen after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship.
Mexican police turned Peterson over to the FBI. But they says Rodriguez was handed over to relatives in Mexicali, because he was an illegal immigrant in the U.S. and could not go back.
Nebraska prosecutors says they are aware of questions about the boy's immigration status.
Peterson is charged with kidnapping, child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a minor in Nebraska. She also faces federal charges of transporting a minor across state lines or a foreign border for sexual activity.
