FRESNO, Calif. (AP) -- Authorities near Fresno, California, say at least two people were killed Saturday morning in a massive multi-vehicle pileup on a foggy freeway.
The California Highway Patrol says up to 100 vehicles, including nine big rigs, were involved in the collision on Northbound Highway 99 as patches of dense fog obscured visibility on the heavily traveled roadway.
Rescuers had to extract several people whose vehicles were pinned under tractor trailers, and the exact number of people injured is not yet known.
Authorities say no hazardous materials appeared to have been spilled. Authorities say the parts of the freeway will remain shut down indefinitely.
