TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) -- The Oklahoma Scenic Rivers Commission receives a $275,000 check from the poultry industry.
The gift is part of a $1.1 million donation pledged to the OSRC in 2005 to be paid over four years.
The OSRC requested funds from various governmental agencies, corporations and municipalities two years ago to preserve and protect the Illinois River Watershed. The poultry companies were among those responding.
There are 1,660 active poultry houses in the Illinois River watershed, a decline from 1,942 houses two years ago.
Jackie Cunningham of the Poultry Community Council says the decrease in active houses significantly reduces the amount of litter produced in the watershed.
The poultry companies that made the contribution are Peterson Farms, Tyson Foods, Simmons Foods, George's, Cargill Turkey Production and Willow Brook Foods.
