OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A research instructor at the Dean McGee Eye Institute in Oklahoma City receives a $30,000 grant for his breakthrough findings in retinal degenerative eye diseases.

The Knights Templar Eye Foundation awarded the money to Doctor Nawajes Mandal.

Eye Institute president Dr. David Parke says Mandal's work at the cellular level of macular degeneration has yielded valuable clues about how the disease works and ways the damage can be prevented.

Mandal has focused on diseases in which the light responsive cells in the retina die, leading to blindness.

One form of retinal dystrophy is macular degeneration.
