They are celebrating in Denver as the Colorado Rockies earn a trip to the World Series for the first time ever. And, there’s lots of celebrating at 15th and Yale in Tulsa, too. The News On 6’s Rick Wells reports the Colorado Rockies lineup is loaded with former Tulsa Drillers.
The Colorado Rockies are going to the World Series, after sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks. Now with 21 wins in the last 22 games, the season has a fairytale-like quality.
"We are like proud parents you have to say. Especially when you have 12 to 14 players on the 25 man roster,†says Tulsa Drillers president Chuck Lamson.
Among the driller exes is League Championship Series MVP Matt Holliday. The Stillwater standout may well be the National League’s Season MVP.
Jeff Francis is the Rockies’ top pitcher. He played for the Tulsa Drillers in 2004. Also, Troy Tulowtzki, a standout short stop for the Drillers in 2006, has been a terrific rookie with the Colorado Rockies.
“Seems like I was just fighting for a job in spring training. Now, I'm in the World Series,†said Troy Tulowitzki of the Colorado Rockies.
Half of the pitchers and all but one outfielder on the Rockies played for the Drillers in Tulsa. It seems remarkable that one minor league team would have such an impact so quickly on its parent club.
“I don't think in their wildest dreams the folks in Denver thought this team would come together quite like it has,†said Drillers president Chuck Lamson.
And, there's a way you can celebrate right along with the Colorado Rockies. The Denver Post is offering a unique service. It’s called “Desk Top Rockies.†You print them off, cut them out, add some tape, and you’ve got Matt Holliday dancing around your desk.
Game one of the World Series is next Wednesday. The Colorado Rockies will play Boston or Cleveland.
