BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. (AP) -- A restored 1930 gas station in southeast Kansas reopens Saturday as a Route 66 Visitor Center.
A grand opening ceremony will be at the center in downtown Baxter Springs, Kansas, just across the Oklahoma state line.
The Baxter Springs Historical Society used volunteer work and materials to match a $26,000 grant from National Park Service Route 66 Corridor Preservation Program.
The building will be stocked with tourism brochures and Route 66 souvenirs. Most of the structure is painted tan with doors, doorframes and window frames painted maroon and an orange roof, which was the color scheme of Phillips 66 stations used from 1947 to 1959.
