It has been open for only two weeks and Tulsa Community College already hopes its new Education Outreach Center will help bring opportunity to groups who are typically forgotten. The center is located in the heart of one of Tulsa's most diverse neighborhoods at 2201 South Garnett.
TCC officials say anyone can come and get career counseling, learn about financial aid, and take college placement exams. The Education Outreach Center is also offering English as a Second Language.
Isaac Hiriart is the Center's coordinator. Hiriart says the facility will help open more doors for people in the workplace.
"Right now with the Hispanic population growing in town, if you're bilingual you're worth more. So if these students can learn the language, English, they will become a better part of society," says Isaac Hiriart.
TCC officials say the Center's first English class is full, but instructors are working to get an additional class set up.
Hiriart says the TCC Education Outreach Center will offer other classes in the future. Eventually, TCC students can prepare and take their GED test, learn about computers and Spanish.
The classes are being offered at a lower cost than regular TCC credit classes.
