BRISTOW, Okla. (AP) _ A judge sentenced Raye Dawn Smith to 27 years in prison Monday in the death of her 2-year-old girl. A Creek County jury found Smith guilty July 18 of enabling child abuse in the death of Kelsey Smith-Briggs and recommended a 27-year prison term.
The child died October 11, 2005, at her home near Meeker after months of suffering broken bones, bruises and other injuries.
At trial, prosecutors alleged Kelsey's stepfather, Michael Porter, abused the child and eventually sexually assaulted and murdered her and that Smith did nothing to stop it.
Porter, once charged with murder in the case, pleaded guilty in February to enabling child abuse. He is serving 30 years in prison.
Kelsey died at her mother and stepfather's home near Meeker. Evidence indicated she suffered repeated injuries in the final months of her life, including a broken collarbone, broken legs and bruises on her face and body.
Her death led to an Oklahoma law bearing her name that improved training of court-appointed child advocates and makes judges more accountable for their rulings in child-placement cases.
