An officer claims self-defense after firing his weapon at a suspect. The Tulsa Police Department says he opened fire after the suspect pulled a gun on him. Six in the Morning reporter Chris Wright reports authorities aren't sure why the suspect drew his weapon and then pointed it at the officer, but they say the officer had no choice but to react quickly.
It all happened around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Thomas Square Apartments Near 61st and Peoria. Tulsa Police say while on routine patrol the officer ran into two men, one of whom suddenly pulled a gun, but did not fire it. The officer then fired his weapon twice, but didn't hit either suspect.
The suspect with the gun turned himself in, while the other man took off. Police are still looking for him.
Authorities say there was really no reason for the man to pull his gun.
"I don't know why they initially tried to make contact with him. When the officer tried to stop him, he did pull the gun and point it at him, so at least we have that, if we don't have a separate crime other than pointing the deadly weapon," said Tulsa Police Captain Dave Roberts.
The officer was on patrol as part of the Department's new Safe City program. TPD is trying to increase its presence in high-crime areas.
