OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ An Oklahoma County jury on Thursday convicted an Edmond man of first-degree murder in the death of his girlfriend's 3-year-old son in July 2006.
The six-man, six-woman jury also recommended a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole for Jeremy Michael Lakey, 26.
Lakey was arrested in the July 22, 2006, death of Damion Michael Dunn, who was found at an Edmond apartment Lakey shared with the child's mother.
Thursday's verdict drew muffled sobs from several of Lakey's relatives, while Damion's father tearfully hugged his mother outside the courtroom.
Prosecutors accused Lakey of slamming Damion's head into a hard surface in a fit of rage.
Lakey testified Wednesday in his own defense. He denied doing anything to hurt the boy, who he said meant a lot to him.
