STORRS, Conn. (AP) _ Elena Delle Donne, considered the top women's basketball prospect in the 2008 recruiting class, has committed to Connecticut, her father told the Journal Inquirer of Manchester.
Delle Donne, a 6’5 guard from Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Del., also was considering Tennessee and Villanova.
``The ultimate decision came to the connection she felt with the UConn players, the proximity to home, the chance to play in the area in the Big East, and the UConn coaching staff with a Hall of Famer in Geno (Auriemma) as well as (Associate Head Coach) Chris Dailey,'' Ernie Delle Donne told the newspaper. ``It was like choosing between a banana split and a hot fudge sundae. Any way you go you've made a great selection.''
Elena Delle Donne was not available comment because she had her wisdom teeth removed Monday morning. UConn coach Geno Auriemma cannot comment until he has received Delle Donne's signed letter of intent.
She will join a team that includes Tina Charles, the 2005 national high school player of the year, and incoming freshman Maya Moore, the 2006 player of the year.
She joins a class that already includes Heather Buck, a 6’5 center from Stonington; Tiffany Hayes, a 6’ guard from Winter Haven, Fla., and Caroline Doty, a 5’11 guard, Pottstown, Pa., a former AAU teammate of Delle Donne.
