Sand Springs Police are cracking down on drunk drivers. They've set up a checkpoint at the U.S. Highway 97 T near the Osage Million Dollar Elm casino. News On 6 anchor Jennifer Loren reports the safety checkpoint is a joint effort between Sand Springs Police and the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office.
Officers are asking drivers to pull to the side where they make sure everyone is wearing a seatbelt, they're checking for outstanding warrants and checking to make sure no one is driving under the influence.
Police say the checkpoint is meant to compliment the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office's new campaign called "Drunk driving, Over the Limit - Under Arrest." It’s located at the Highway 97 T in Sand Springs, just south of the Osage Million Dollar Elm Casino. So far they say it's been a great success.
"We've had several vehicles towed for various reasons, up to and including a DUI," said Sand Springs Police Sergeant John Tillman. "Gentlemen actually tried to drive through our barricade. He didn't realize that, he said quote, "We didn't know you were police."
So far officers say they've arrested at least five people. They say some of them for outstanding warrants, and some of them for suspicion of DUI.
