OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Someone hacked in to computers at three local law enforcement agencies, potentially gaining access to private information, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Friday.
The computers were being operated by authorities at police departments in Elk City and Eufaula and at the Kiowa County Sheriff's Department.
These computers are among about 380 across the state that are linked to the Oklahoma Law Enforcement Telecommunications System, but patrol spokesman Capt. Chris West said the state system was not breached.
West said anyone who had information that might have been run through the computers at these three agencies should take precautions such as checking recent charges on their credit cards. That would include people who were stopped for traffic violations and had their driver's licenses checked, he said.
West said hard drives from the computer terminals that were breached have been seized and turned over to the FBI for forensic examination.
He had little details of the investigation, but said authorities believed someone was able to hack into the computers because those operating them accessed "inappropriate or undesirable websites." West declined comment on the exact nature of the websites that were accessed. He said the FBI is assisting in the investigation.
