BALTIMORE (AP) _ The Texas Rangers became the first team in 110 years to score 30 runs in a game, setting an American League record in a 30-3 rout of the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.
Trailing 3-0 in the opener of a doubleheader, the Rangers scored five runs in the fourth, nine in the sixth, 10 in the eighth and six in the ninth.
It was the ninth time a major league team scored 30 runs, the first since Chicago set the major league record in a 36-7 rout of Louisville in a National League game on June 28, 1897, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
Marlon Byrd and Travis Metcalf hit grand slams for the Rangers. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Ramon Vazquez each homered twice and finished with seven RBIs.
David Murphy had five of the Rangers' 29 hits, the most by a major league team since Milwaukee had 31 in a 22-2 victory over Toronto on Aug. 28, 1992, according to Elias.
Texas set a team record for runs scored in a doubleheader _ before the second game started.
Hours after announcing manager Dave Trembley would return for the 2008 season, the Orioles absorbed the most lopsided loss in franchise history and set a team record for hits allowed in a game.
Twins 8, Mariners 4
At Minneapolis, Michael Cuddyer's grand slam fueled a seven-run first inning for Minnesota against Miguel Batista, and the Twins ended Seattle's winning streak at five.
Carlos Silva (10-12), who entered with the second-worst run support among American League starters, cruised with the big lead and completed seven innings for his first victory this month. Silva gave up two runs and eight hits, hitting one batter and striking out three.
Jason Kubel, who went 3-for-4, hit an RBI single in the second to polish off Batista's shortest start this year. Batista (13-9) surrendered eight runs, nine hits and one walk in two innings.
Ben Broussard broke up Silva's shutout by going deep with one out in the seventh, giving the Mariners seven homers in the three-game series.
Athletics 4, Blue Jays 1
At Toronto, Esteban Loaiza won in his season debut by outpitching A.J. Burnett, and Oakland completed a three-game sweep of Toronto.
Loaiza (1-0), sidelined since March with neck and knee injuries, allowed one run and three hits in 7 2-3 innings. He struck out four and walked two, throwing 110 pitches. After Aaron Hill's solo homer in the fifth, Loaiza retired 12 of his next 13 batters.
Alan Embree finished the four-hitter for his 16th save in 19 chances.
Burnett (7-7) gave up four runs _ just one earned _ and four hits in seven innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Jack Cust hit his team-leading 21st homer for a 2-1 lead.
Royals 7, White Sox 6
At Chicago, Billy Butler homered and drove in three runs to back Brian Bannister's strong outing for Kansas City, and kept Chicago from completing their first series sweep at home since August 2006.
Bannister (10-7) lowered his ERA to 3.28, eighth-best in the American League. After giving up two runs, three hits and a walk in the first inning, the rookie right-hander retired 18 of 21 batters.
The White Sox cut it to 7-6 in the ninth on Josh Fields' three-run homer off Joakim Soria with two outs. Jim Thome singled before Soria struck out Paul Konerko to end it.
Konerko hit his 25th home run in the eighth off Gobble to make it 7-3.
The Royals struck early against struggling Jose Contreras (6-16), scoring two runs in each of the first two innings. Contreras gave up four runs and six hits in six innings.
