HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson is joining more than two dozen other attorneys general in calling for an investigation into alcoholic energy drinks they say are aimed at youths.
Attorneys general in 28 states, the District of Columbia and Guam want the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau to examine the ingredients and the marketing of the drinks which include alcohol and caffeine.
The group says the marketing targets teenagers and underage adults who already buy nonalcoholic energy drinks.
They also want to know if the drinks are properly classified as malt beverages. The malt beverage classification in many states allows for cheaper and wider sale of the drinks and makes them more readily available to underage customers.
The attorneys general single out Miller Brewing for its Sparks and Sparks Plus, Anheuser-Busch for Bud Extra and Charge Beverages for its Liquid Charge and Liquid Core drinks.
