OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ An Oklahoma City soldier was among four soldiers killed in Iraq after the detonation of an improvised explosive device, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.
Staff Sergeant William D. Scates died Saturday in Arab Jabour, Iraq. Scates and the other three soldiers were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division in Fort Stewart, Georgia.
Moreana Whitson says her 31-year-old son had wanted to be in the military since he was about 5 or 6 years old. Whitson says he attended Western Heights High School in southwest Oklahoma City and joined the military after graduation.
She says her son had done more than one tour of duty and was worried about coming back alive this time. But Whitson says her son was brave and loved his country.
