PERKINS, Okla. (AP) -- The body of a 7-year-old Perkins boy was recovered from the Cimarron River Sunday, authorities said. Noah Kellog's body was recovered shortly after 11 a.m. less than a half mile from where he slipped beneath the surface of the river on Saturday, Oklahoma Highway Patrol Capt. Chris West said.
Noah's body was in about a foot and a half of water and about 20 feet from the north shoreline, West said. He had been missing since about 5 p.m. Saturday when he disappeared in about 10 feet of water about one mile south of Perkins, West said.
The boy's father told investigators that he and his five children were swimming off a sandbar in a relatively calm section of the river when his son began drifting away into deeper waters, OHP trooper Betsy Randolph said.
Randolph said the boy's father turned around for a second before noticing Noah had drifted "too far out" again.
Noah began to panic, telling his father something was pulling him under, Randolph said. Randolph was unsure if there is an undercurrent or undertow in that part of the river.
The boy was taken under and never resurfaced, she said. After about 10 minutes of looking for his son, Noah's father called 911.
Search crews called off the search at about 9 p.m. Saturday. They resumed the search at about 8 a.m. Sunday, West said.
