Clinton is apparently leading in Iowa but by a much smaller margin than indicated in national polls. Although Edwards remains among the leaders, the poll shows he has lost his long-standing lead in the state. For Iowa Republicans, Romney is far ahead, but 31% haven't picked a candidate. Thompson places third even though he hasn't declared his candidacy, and former front-runner John McCain's support has dropped to 3%.

The telephone poll by the University of Iowa of 787 registered Iowa voters who intend to attend the caucuses was conducted July 29-Aug. 5. It has a sampling margin of error for the 425 Democrats of plus or minus 5 percentage points and for the 308 Republicans of plus or minus 5.6 percentage points.
