Diversafest kicked off Friday night. Thirty thousand people are expected to rock out in downtown Tulsa over the weekend. Music lovers can hear 20 different musical styles and more than 150 bands. News On 6 anchor Latoya Silmon reports the most famous one, The Flaming Lips, is headlining Friday’s show.

“It's also one of the biggest, most well known Oklahoma acts in this state right now. They've got incredible clout with the indie rock scene, and the young kids all the way up to college rockers, so we've got an entire span of ages as well as tastes that they cover,” Dfest production coordinator Gary Hizer said.

The Flaming Lips are headlining Dfest.

“It's great who doesn't love being home,” said Flaming Lips lead singer Wayne Coyne.

Some decided to get dressed up for the Oklahoma City band by dressing down.

“The lips have a CD titled ‘The Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots’ so we got the idea to paint ourselves pink,” Flaming Lips fan Peter Marshall said.

The duo staked out the main stage most of Friday, and their hard work finally paid off. They were two of the lucky few to catch the band's sound check. Lead Singer Wayne Coyne says they don't mind.

“The thing that we have that is really great is the audience,” he said. “They give this sort of enthusiasm and love, and even if you've never heard us before if you're standing here when it happens you're just overwhelmed.”

Coyne says playing for them is worth more than any Grammy, by the way the band has three of them.

“We never thought of it like we want to be rock stars or some big stadium band. We just like the fact that we're doing what we like, we do the kind of music we like, and obviously it's touching some people out there,” Coyne said.

The band hits the stage at 11 p.m. tickets for the entire weekend are $20.
