The most eclectic music festival in the Midwest kicks off Friday night in downtown Tulsa. Organizers say 20 different genres of music will be represented at this year's Diversafest, or D-Fest. The music starts Friday night at 8 o’clock, but the party's already underway. The News On 6’s Joshua Brakhage reports D-Fest is all about standing out in a crowd.
Standing out from the crowd is what lots of unsigned acts hope to achieve, but the festival isn't just about concerts. Producers and artists are holding workshops this weekend for folks hoping to break into the music business. Marcus Collins says it's all about networking, and finding other artists and agents that can take their band to the next level.
"You can't just sit on your rear and expect it to come to you. You have to go out and make the contacts and be willing to work hard at it,†said unsigned artist Marcus Collins. “You've got to be committed."
Marcus and his Euro-pop band Luma are first up at 8:00 p.m. Friday. They play at McNellies.
The gates for D-Fest are now open, but you can still get tickets. They're just $20 and they'll get you in Friday night and Saturday.
Friday’s headliners, The Flaming Lips, take the stage at 11 p.m. Friday night.
