More than 200 teens from around the nation are spending a week renovating homes in Green Country. They're called World Changers, part of the Southern Baptist Convention. The News On 6’s Heather Lewin reports the crew was in Catoosa on Monday, trying to make a difference, with nothing more than hammers in their hands and love in their hearts.
They're not professional roofers, but what these teens lack in experience they make up for with good intentions.
"For me it's just helping people out, and giving somebody something that they really need,†said Maggie Swisher of Colorado.
From states as far as Tennessee to Hawaii, these youth volunteers are giving up part of their summer vacation to help those in need.
"Yeah, there's other things I could have done instead of this, but I think it's totally worth it,†said Tulsa resident Daniel Rock.
"Usually you don't get that from any teenagers because they're not involved. Now that you have more teenagers involved it's good,†said Stephon Reed of Tennessee.
The teens say one of the toughest parts is the climate change, but working as a team, they feel they're getting a lot done.
"It's tough, I mean it's hot, but it's all worth it in the end,†said Lauren South of Tennessee.
"We're coming out here helping him build a new roof, and that could just change a lot. He's probably going through things we'd never know, and that could change a lot in his life,†Reed.
The team will also be doing yard work, painting and other home improvements. Nicole Pogue's been in the program for four years and is now a leader.
"For me to just do even a small fraction, to be able to give up my time, just even go and help just one person is kind of a way of me showing that love that Jesus showed me to other people,†said Pogue.
The World Changers volunteers will be here all week, renovating homes in Catoosa, Muskogee and Tulsa.
