CARNOUSTIE, Scotland (AP) _ Pro golfer Scott Verplank of Edmond started well in Thursday's first round of the British Open but couldn't keep the momentum and shot a 1-over, 72.

Verplank was 3-under after seven holes but a double-bogey on nine and bogeys on 15 and 18 left him in a large group at 1-over.

Former Oklahoma State golfers Charles Howell III and Hunter Mahan are in another large group at 2-over while former Oklahoma golfer and one-time British Open champ Todd Hamilton shot 10-over, 81.

Sergio Garcia is the clubhouse leader after shooting 6-under, 65.
