NORMAN, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma free safety Darien Williams has surgery on his left foot Monday, but is expected to return in time for the beginning of the regular season.

OU spokesman Kenny Mossman says the 5-foot-10, 197-pound Williams could be sidelined as long as six weeks following the surgery to fix a stress fracture.

The Sooners are scheduled to begin fall practice in early August.

Williams, from Mesquite, Texas, started 11 games last season as a junior and finished fourth on the team with 67 tackles. He also had two sacks, two forced fumbles and one interception.

OU will open its football season September 1st against North Texas. The Sooners went 11-and-3 last season and lost to Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl.
