DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) _ A 10-year-old boy will spend at least six months in juvenile detention for helping other youths beat a homeless Army veteran, a judge said Friday.

The boy pleaded no contest to misdemeanor battery in April and had been released to an aunt in Michigan.

Another 10-year-old was convicted of aggravated battery in the case and is also being held in a juvenile facility. The state Juvenile Justice Department is overseeing his evaluations and will determine how long he is held.

The boys and Jeremy Woods, 17, were charged with beating John D'Amico, 58, so badly in March he needed reconstructive facial surgery. Woods is being prosecuted as an adult, and he could face probation or up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

The youth sentenced Friday got a lesser sentence than the other 10-year-old because he cooperated with prosecutors.

The three were accused of beating and stoning D'Amico with a concrete block.
