Like the Marine Corps, Tulsa Public Schools is looking for a few good men and women. Candidates with the right stuff would be transporting some very precious cargo, students. The News On 6’s Rick Wells reports the district is recruiting bus drivers for the coming school year.

"We're looking for 50 drivers,” said TPS transportation department operation manager Valerie Courchesne.

Courchesne says they do this every year.

"Every year people find a job during the summer, and think they need a job that goes all year through,” Courchesne said.

And for most drivers this is a nine month contract. Christine White is one of the drivers who works through the summer, driving for the many summer programs.

"I like being around the children,” said White.

A bus load of kids is pretty important cargo.

"You're the first thing they see in the morning and the last thing they may see that afternoon,” Courchesne said.

She says the bus ride to and from is kind of an extension of the classroom.

There's lots of training, and they're not just looking for anybody. They are looking for people with character to transport their students. So, there is classroom training and drivers training. They help you get the certifications you need.

Courchesne says sometimes people are put off by the size of the buses. They look big, but she says they really aren't.

"It's like a big car,” she said.
