PITTSBURGH (AP) _ The Penguins signed Sidney Crosby to a five-year contract extension worth about $45 million that will keep in Pittsburgh through the 2012-13 season.

Crosby, who turns 20 next month, became the NHL's youngest MVP since Wayne Gretzky when he was awarded the Hart Trophy last month.

The three-year contract Crosby signed as a rookie lasts through the coming season. The extension keeps him under contract for the next six seasons.

The team named Crosby the youngest captain in league history after last season, when he led the NHL with 120 points (36 goals, 84 assists) as the Penguins won 47 games, after winning only 22 the season before.

The Penguins' 47-point improvement was the fourth best in NHL history, but they were eliminated in five games by eventual Eastern Conference champion Ottawa in their first-round playoff series.
