One teenager is dead and another one is fighting for his life Friday night. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says the boys' ATVs collided near Chelsea, knocking both off, and then a car hit them. News on 6 anchor Latoya Silmon reports the wreck is still under investigation, but OHP says one thing’s certain; ATVs and the highway don't mix.

A quiet highway may seem safe, but one trooper says if you put an ATV on it, it's a recipe for disaster

“ATVs are not designed to be on the roadways,” said OHP Trooper Lt. Jack Choate.

Troopers say Thursday night that combination was fatal. It was just before 10 p.m. when two teenage boys were riding along a stretch of highway on their ATVs. They collided, and then a car came up and hit them. The accident killed one of the boys and sent the other one to the hospital.

“Anytime you have to tell someone that their loved one isn't coming home, it's heart wrenching,” Choate said. “It's absolutely horrible.”

Especially since Lt. Jack Choate says what happened on Highway 28 could have been prevented. It's against Oklahoma law to drive ATVs on the road, but he says unfortunately it happens often.

“It's horribly dangerous. These things are not equip to be on the road they have the wrong type of tires,” Choate said. “They don't have mirrors. They have improper head lamps.”

He says that's why the boys in the Chelsea case collided. They couldn't see each other and chances are the driver didn't see them.

Trooper Choate says the case is still under investigation and it will be up to the DA to decide if anyone should be penalized.

Governor Henry just signed a bill that would require all ATV riders under 18 to wear a helmet while riding on public land. The law takes effect November 1st.
