Several Hundred Still Waiting On Power

It is now the final push to get the power back on to every customer affected by the ice storm. News On 6 anchor Scott Thompson reports utility crews are now concentrating on the last few pockets of powerless customers. Fixing the massive damage done to the grid was one thing, chasing down the last isolated problems is another.

"There really not no set hours. Uh, some nights are a little longer than others," said Houston Utility Worker Bubba Wilcox.

Wilcox and his crew from Houston are some of the last out-of-state workers still in the Tulsa area. They drove into town while the ice was still falling and were surprised by what they saw.

"I went on Katrina, back along the coast of Florida and Mississippi, New Orleans area, this ice storm is probably one of the worst ones I've seen. I know we've had ice from time to time in our area but nothing like this," said Wilcox.

On Friday, Wilcox and his crew followed two guides supplied by PSO to Sand Springs. They thought they were just going to repair minor damage to one residential line, but instead found a pocket of customers who've been in the dark for a while.

"Since a week ago Sunday!” said power loss victim Tom Childers.

Childers has power, but his 94-year-old mother does not. She's staying with him until the electricity comes back on.

"She's a trooper, but she's ready to come back and get in her own home with some electricity and heat," said Childers. "She had never seen an ice storm like this is what she's telling me."

The only people who may be more eager than customers to get the power back, is the out-of-state crews themselves, but they say they'll stay as long as they're needed.

"I feel sorry for some of the people for the stuff they had to go through, but also the people were real friendly and nice, willing to help us and glad to see us here. We're just glad that we could be here and help 'em," said Wilcox.

Wilcox and his crew might be able to head home to Houston as early as Saturday. Most power companies in our area say they should have all the power back on by Sunday night.
