The City of Tulsa Medical Emergency Response Corp declared an external disaster Monday and set up a command post in downtown Tulsa, according to a news release by Saint Francis Hospital.

The disaster was declared after five large hospitals began operating on emergency power and power outages continued throughout the Tulsa metropolitan area, said Sevan Roberts with Saint Francis Hospital.

Roberts said that because of concern for the entire region, command posts were established at Saint Francis Health System entities to maintain safe operations and anticipate health care needs.

Currently, Saint Francis Health System is experiencing an influx of patients with a variety of needs to the emergency room. Ambulance traffic to Saint Francis Hospital has also increased because of limited capabilities at other hospitals. Roberts tells The News On 6 that the influx is expected to continue as long as there are power outages.

As part of its External Disaster Plan, Saint Francis Health System has activated its manpower pool. Roberts says Saint Francis is requesting all available clinical and non-clinical employees contact the hospital at 494-6904.

According to the Saint Francis Hospital news release, limited arrangements are available for employee childcare at the Ave Maria House and accommodations for staff sleeping overnight via the central staffing office.
