OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- A change in state law means only elected officials can now ask that a city be investigated as a speed trap. The law was passed by the state legislature earlier this year and it puts back on the streets some police departments that had been prohibited from writing traffic tickets.
Cities that receive more than half their total revenue from traffic fines can be declared speed traps by the state Department of Public Safety.
In the past a citizen could ask that a city or community be declared a speed trap but under the change in law that took effect November 1st citizen complaints must now go through an elected official before DPS will investigate.
DPS attorney Wellon Poe says there have been no requests yet to investigate.
