COWETA, Okla. (AP) When members of the Creek Nation were given their original allotment of 160 acres, a couple of those acres would traditionally be set aside for a small cemetery. Over the years many of these graveyards have fallen victim to neglect or worse, so now the tribe is stepping in to protect this sacred ground.
Joyce Bear of the tribe's Culture Preservation Office says her group works with the permission of the landowner to clean up and document each cemetery.
In some cases, these cemeteries have disappeared. Farmers have plowed them over and moved or thrown out the headstones.
