OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A record number of Oklahomans have registered to vote in the general election in November.

More than 17,000 Republicans and 14,000 Democrats have registered to vote in the last two months. State Election Board officials say it's possible another 80,000 voters will register before the October 8th deadline.

State Election Board Secretary Mike Clingman says several groups are at work to register more voters.

Democrats have launched a drive to get minorities, including Hispanics, blacks and American Indians, to register. About 250,000 more Democrats than Republicans are registered in Oklahoma.

Meanwhile, church groups, such as the Baptists, are spearheading a drive to get their ministers to tell members to vote against the lottery and gambling.
