MIAMI (AP) _ Hurricane Karl has formed in the central Atlantic on Saturday but posed no immediate threat to land, forecasters said.

Karl, the seventh hurricane this season, had top sustained winds near 85 mph and was expected to get stronger throughout the day, according to the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

At 11 a.m. EDT, Karl was centered about 1,020 miles west of the Cape Verde islands _ still closer to Africa than the Caribbean _ and moving northwest near 12 mph.

Karl comes on the heels of Tropical Storm Jeanne, which was nearing the southeastern Bahamas, and could gain strength.

Karl was the 11th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to Nov. 30.
