OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- More Oklahoma schools students are mastering Algebra, but most struggle with the subject.
State Board of Education members were told Thursday about one in three Oklahoma high school students understand Algebra One.
That's slightly higher than in 2003. Last year's end-of-instruction test scores showed 22% of high schoolers had satisfactory algebra skills. The proficiency rate rose to 30% this year.
Some state education officials are happy the upward trend. Others weren't as pleased.
State Superintendent Sandy Garrett says math is clearly the state's weakness. "She says the state has a long way to go in end-of-instruction testing. Garrett says teachers may be teaching too much remedial math in their high school algebra classes.
