OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) _ A national American Indian group is planning to put poll watchers at voting precincts in 13 states, including Oklahoma, this November.

The group is called The Native Vote 2004: Election Protection Project. It's an initiative to ensure that every Indian voter who is eligible to vote does, and that each vote is counted fairly.

Heather Dawn Thompson is the group's national coordinator. She says South Dakota is the only other place in Indian Country where this has been done before.

The group is focusing on areas with high percentages of American Indian voters.

Other states include Montana, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Washington and Wisconsin.
