A lesbian couple fighting for the right to have their marriage license recognized by the Cherokee Nation appeared in court Friday.

Dawn McKinley and Kathy Reynolds triggered a controversy in May when they asked for a marriage license from the tribe. They got the license and then married in Tulsa. But they've been unsuccessful in trying to file the license with the tribe.

A tribal member who is also an attorney filed a petition against the couple's marriage. The couple wants that dismissed. McKinley and Reynolds say the laws on marital unions are vague on gender.

After considering more court documents Friday, the judge set another hearing for December.
