A Tulsa man is in the hospital a car wreck that rescuers describe as one of the toughest extrications they've ever done.

Nyle Norwood was pinned for more than an hour after VW Beetle was crushed underneath a dump truck.

News on 6 reporter Heather Lewin says emergency crews arrived on scene and leapt into action trying to free the driver pinned inside a Volkswagen Beetle. But for this victim, rescue would not come quickly. Tulsa Fire Captain Dannie Caldwell: â€œGenerally you don't have a truck loaded with debris sitting on top of a car and have a person pinned."

Officials say the truck was so weighed down; their usual method of inflating airbags didn't work. Rescuers had to resort to hydraulic hand jacks, extremely slow and dangerous work. "If you lift a truck that heavy with that debris, if you don't put anything under it and your jack failed all that weight would come crashing down on the victim."

After more than an hour the victim was freed.

Tulsa Police say it all happened when the dump truck was headed uphill and the driver was unable to downshift. The truck started rolling backwards and the driver discovered he had no brakes. The Volkswagen was simply in his path.

Nyle Norwood was alert and conscious when he was pulled from the car. Hospital officials say he is in fair condition.
