A new way to neuter your dog

Dog owners might be more likely to neuter their pets if it were easier to do. That's what they are talking about Thursday at Tulsa Community Collegeâ€™s West campus.

News on 6 reporter Rick Wells say there was a seminar at TCC Thursday to demonstrate Neutersol the only FDA approved injectable sterilizer.

The FDA says it works, but will it be accepted and used, that's probably the biggest question. Tulsa has a dog problem.

Tulsa has too many stray dogs, the animal shelter takes in about 15,000 a year. Rescue groups help adopt out what they can, but about 12,000 have to be killed. Most of the dogs they pick up have not been spayed or neutered despite the fact itâ€™s the law for most dogs.

The Tulsa Animal Shelter vet, Dr Paul Schmitz, hopes this new procedure will help. "It's a good idea it's time has come and there is room for that in the tools we have to use."

Dr Schmitz says there are drawbacks too. It can be used only on puppies and it may not eliminate some of the behavioral problems like surgical neutering does.
