NEWKIRK, Okla. (AP) _ A population of zebra mussels has been found in Oklahoma's Kaw Reservoir in Kay County, after traveling 60 miles downstream from El Dorado Reservoir.

Zebra mussels can cause problems by out-competing native mussels and small fish for plankton. In the upper Midwest, zebra mussels cause millions of dollars of damage by clogging intake pipes at water-treatment plants

Zebra mussels came from Europe and spread into the Great Lakes in commercial boat bilge water in the mid-1980s.

They've since spread to about 20 states. The Kaw infestation isn't Oklahoma's first. Zebra mussels have been in the Arkansas River system in eastern Oklahoma for about 10 years.
