(Oklahoma City-AP) -- Former President Bill Clinton says many Americans reassessed their attitudes toward government workers after the Oklahoma City bombing.

Clinton mentions the April 19th, 1995, attack in his new autobiography "My Life."

Clinton says the extremists didn't go away, but went on the defensive and never quite regained the position they enjoyed before Timothy McVeigh took the demonization of government beyond the limits of humanity.

He says he tried to comfort bombing victims and the country, as well as step up counter-terrorism efforts.

The former president mentions one of the victims -- US Secret Service agent Alan Whicher, who had served on his detail before going to Oklahoma.

Clinton described the Oklahoma City National Memorial as simple but powerful.
