CSI is one the most popular shows on TV right now. That may be why the CSI class is one of the most popular among students at TCC's College for Young Scholars.
The News on 6's Rick Wells went to TCC's Northeast campus to see if the students can figure out "who done it".
Cherie Bergeron:†You guys having any luck with that?" "No!" Who killed Felice Navidad, that's what these student's are trying to figure out. They are evaluating the evidence, checking fingerprints, looking at DNA. They have already have identified four good suspects. The instructor for this class is Cherie Bergeron. "Makes them think beyond the regular text book."
They are 4th, 5th and 6th graders who've applied for the program from schools all over the area. Annalee Braxton goes to Mills Elementary in Owasso; Patrick Harle is from St Pius X in Tulsa. Rick Wells: "So you think you're making progress?" "Yeah."
There are 16 students 8 two person teams, they do tests, make notes and follow where the evidence leads. There was a white powder on some of the suspect’s shoes, there's a test to determine what it was. "Somebody tampered with the water do you think?†"Yeah."
They use chemically treated paper to check the PH levels of water they found at the crime scene. This group is trying to find a hidden message on a piece of cardboard. "Probably says you're looking in the wrong place." When the testing is done the students sit down and discuss what they've found. Bergeron: "It's pretty incriminating isn't it."
There is really no correct answer. Evaluation of the evidence and coming to a logical conclusion is what this is all about. One thing's for sure; they're all developing a healthy respect for police work.
The CSI class will present evidence they analyzed during a mock trial being conducted by the Exploring Justice and Law class. The mock trial is Thursday.
