Report: Lack of exports hurts Southern states

(Oklahoma City-AP) -- A new report claims Southern states could have gained $28-billion in sales and more than 379,000 jobs if they exported products at the same rate as the national average.
The report based on data from 2001 was outlined today at the Southern Growth Policies Board conference in Oklahoma City.
The report recommends states train their work force to speak excellent English and a foreign language and understand world geography, history, cultures and geopolitics.
To get those skills, the report suggests states change their educational curricula, diversify study abroad programs and recruit foreign students.
Oklahoma is one of 13 states in the Southern Growth Policies Board, which also includes Puerto Rico.
