(Norman-AP) -- Assistant coach Ray Hayward has resigned from his position with the University of Oklahoma.

Oklahoma head baseball coach Larry Cochell announced Hayward's resignation Thursday.

Hayward has been the Sooners pitching coach for the past five seasons.

He also played for OU from 1980 to 1983.

Hayward was a two-time All-American pitcher and outfielder for the Sooners.

He returned to Oklahoma in the fall of 1999 after pitching professionally for eight seasons and serving as a Major League Baseball scout.

Cochell says the resignation is effective immediately and there is no timetable for naming Hayward's successor.

The Sooners finished their season at 38-and-24. They were knocked out of post-season play with a loss to UCLA in the Regionals.
