(Oklahoma City-AP) -- A 30-year-old architect faces a 40-year prison sentence for driving drunk and killing an Oklahoma Christian University student in 1999.
Emily Michelle Dowdy was convicted of first-degree manslaughter Wednesday in Oklahoma County court.
Prosecutors and witnesses say Dowdy was driving on Interstate 240 early in the morning when she collided head-on with 20-year-old Ryan Brewer. Dowdy was a University of Oklahoma student at the time.
Police tests show Dowdy's blood-alcohol content was well above the legal limit.
Defense attorney J.W. Coyle the Third says Dowdy was involuntarily under the influence of a date-rape drug.
But jurors didn't buy the involuntary intoxication argument. The prosecutor says the jurors believe Dowdy had no remorse.
