Many people have eliminated paper checks; they use debit or credit cards and pay bills electronically. Now businesses are doing the same.
The Suntan Supercenter in Tulsa uses a scanner to access checking account information. It in effect changes the paper check to an electronic debit card transaction. If there is no money in the account it's rejected.
For business owners like Paul Overholt it saves time and money. "I don't have to keep calling a bank to see if the check went through or not." It has all but eliminated his bad check problem.
The City of Tulsa uses a similar system to convert paper checks to electronic ones. They process faster at the bank and saves the city thousands of dollars.
