(Oklahoma City-AP) – Governor Brad Henry and his wife, Kim, Thursday became the first Oklahomans to register online to be organ donors.
The registration marks the start of the LifeShare Donor Registry that's intended to make it easier for Oklahomans to donate organs. It also helps organ recovery agencies identify donors.
Robert Turner of LifeShare Transplant Donor Services of Oklahoma says there are more than 84-thousand Americans waiting for organ transplants.
Turner says 590 Oklahomans are on the waiting list, a relatively low number that he says is due to the state having so many donors.
He says about 950,000 Oklahomans who registered as organ donors on their driver's license or state ID card will automatically be added to the online registry.
