When disaster strikes, the volunteers of the American Red Cross are ready to spring into action.
Monday, local volunteers trained at the national level. The orientation is required for all Red Cross volunteers who want to respond to large disasters. The training prepares volunteers for many things, such as the time spent away from home while responding to a disaster.
Stephanie Hughes-Huston, Red Cross Director of Response: "This is totally volunteer. These people spend time and energy to make a difference in someone else's life they may not even meet."
On the local level, volunteers are trained to respond to fires, floods and tornadoes. On a national level, they respond to hurricanes, earthquakes and wildfires.
